| List
of Program Benefits |
| The
half day preschool program offers, among other benefits: |
- Developmentally
appropriate and stimulating early childhood instruction which balances
the physical, language, cognitive, and social-emotional areas of development.
- Both a
qualified teacher and an educational assistant, who have early childhood
rehabilitation psychology or related education degrees, present in each
class. (Child to adult ratios are typically 4:1)
- The modeling
of appropriate social skills and impulse control strategies increasing
social competencies.
- Provision
of quality care and respite for the parents at no fee.
- Two nutritious
meals served daily to maximize ability to play and learn and to enhance
physical growth and health.
- Transportation
to and from the center at no fee. (if we did not transport, we
would not reach the children in greatest need; as with food, this is
an anchor to the delivery of our program.)
- Food vouchers
and hampers which are provided in holiday seasons and/or when a family
is in need.
- Clothing
is provided to children in need on a regular basis. (Clothing and food
drives are on-going efforts to replenish supplies for ages 3-6).
- Individual
learning and behavior plans are developed in consultation with family
when developmental delays are found.
- The services
of speech & language therapy, occupational therapy, and psychology
(by on-staff, qualified personnel) are provided when developmental delays
are identified in the areas of speech, language, motor, social, and
behavioral areas.

The EvenStart
Program
(The Early intervention program for preschool children ‘at risk’)
This
is the early intervention program for children ages 3, 4, 5 years.
It provides half day, center-based programs (morning or afternoon).
The children at EvenStart come from homes where there may be poverty,
abuse or neglect. Most have experienced some form of childhood trauma.
Our goals at EvenStart are simple. We provide a safe place to be.
A place that is predictable establishes boundaries and where the most
important work we do is form the relationship with each child.
- We
provide meals because our children are almost always hungry.
- We
provide a center-based preschool service AM or PM, five days a week.
- We
provide speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychological support,
and music and art as part of our program.
- We
provide transportation to and from the program because we know that
most of our families have little in the way of traditional support
systems.
- We
provide an environment that is not afraid of children who are angry,
sad, anxious, or aggressive. We welcome them. And, we provide these
programs in an atmosphere of respect for each child’s family.

The
following assessment and therapy services are offered within this program:
Development
Assessment
This assessment is for children up to the age of six years. It measures
a child's functioning across eight developmental areas (against a standardized
norm). It targets areas of strength and areas for development that are
specific to each child;
Speech
and Language
(assessment and therapy completed by speech pathologists);
Gross
and Fine Motor
(assessments and therapy by an occupational therapist);
Psycho-educational
(testing, reports and treatment).
This includes cognitive, behavioral, and emotional and attention deficit
testing.

Summer Camp
During the months of July and August each summer, we offer full-day camps
(by the week) to children between the ages of 6 and 12 years, who may
be at risk and economically-disadvantaged. This program is offered at
our NorthEast site location at no cost to the children's families..
Examples of typical Summer Camp itineraries are included on our website.
